Exploring South Africa. by Asher

It’s Asher again in Cape Town, South Africa. Anyways, I’m here to tell you about my best day here in Cape Town so far. On Monday, July 9th, my family and I went to a really cool penguin sanctuary. Yes, a penguin sanctuary in South Africa!šŸ§ The penguins there are actually native to South Africa, and are an endangered species after they were frequently hunted in the 20th century. They sometimes make loud honking noises for some reason that makes them sound really funny.šŸ“£The sanctuary itself is located next to the water where there is a beach. However, the beach is strictly reserved…for the penguins!šŸ–šŸ§But there was a really special animal while we were at the sanctuary. While we were walking, a curious furry brown creature who I call Marvin the marmot(I didn’t know he wasn’t a marmot), stumbled upon us. He was very furry and looked sort of like our dog, Trixie. I’ve posted a video of Marvin below. After the sanctuary, we hiked in the African cape. It was very long but ultimately worth it as we got a spectacular view. There was even another furry creature(possibly a lemming) that looked like Marvin from the sanctuary! Our reward for the long hike was a trip to the underpopulated beach at the bottom of the site that was very cool. We roled in the sand and we enjoyed the wonderful time we had had that day.

Ella’s Penguin Paradise Adventure!

Hi! Last Monday we had the most amazing time! We rented a car and drove to see AFRICAN PENGUINS at Boulders Beach, Cape Town. These penguins were so cute! They waddled around on the sand and looked adorable. This species used to be called Jackass Penguins because of their donkey-like sound, but when it was discovered that other penguin species made that noise too they were renamed African Penguins. We went to two beaches to see the penguins. The second was filled with people but we got to see newborn penguins, eggs, and all ages of penguins living together. On the first beach, we were the only people there and the penguins swam in the water but also walked around with us. After the penguins, we drove to the Cape of Good Hope for a two hour hike. It was very beautiful and it had its own private beach! The walk down to the beach must have had about a hundred enormous stairs, but once we got to the shore it was worth it. Cool, white, soft sand made from crushed shells welcomed our aching feet. Another steep slope rolled down to the water. Asher and I put aside cleanliness, lay on our sides, and tumbled down the hill! We laboriously trekked up the steep sandy mound another two times, always rolling down again. We thought we had convinced Troy to join us, when he jumped up as we were rolling and ran down the hill!, claiming victory over a non-existent race. We didnā€™t realize he had cheated (we were tumbling down the slope) until we saw video evidence of his treachery. After weā€™d had our fun at the beach we drove to a very nice restaurant called Thirty Ate and had dinner. We then went home for a couple episodes of the TV show Dexter and fell asleep.

Love you guys (4-13-9 Ā 11-6-13-10-21-1-13-23!)!

Drive to Cape of Good Hope, South Africa

Hello All,

Yesterday we rented a car and drove to Boulder’s Beach in Simon’s Town, South Africa and then on to the Cape of Good Hope (Cape Point).  We saw some beautiful seaside landscapes, frolicked with African Penguins and took in the beautiful views and enjoyed the pristine Diaz Beach at the Cape.  The Penguins were mating, but were also sitting on nests, some with new hatchlings. The highlight for me was the Cape of Good Hope, it was absolutely spectacular.  Most of the tourists were too lazy to take the long stairs down to the beach and back up again so we had a beautiful white sand beach almost all to ourselves.  The water was cold, with dangerous rip tides, so no swimming.  We rolled in the sand and walked along the beach with bare feet.  The day was warm and the sky was cloudless, it was a perfect day.  We are already looking forward to going back when our Nephew/Cousin Imri, comes to join us here for a week in August.  Hello to all from Troy, Ofer, Ella and Asher!

Everyone! It’s Asher….. In AFRICA!

It’s Asher again, this time in Cape Town! Cape Town is a metropolitan city and one of the THREE capitols of South Africa. Yes, South Africa has 3 capitols. Isn’t that so cool? The other two capitols are Pretoria and Bloemfontein. They are both located in central South Africa while Cape Town is located on the tip of South Africa. Anyways, it’s my first time being there and is is so awesome. There are many great restaurants like Earth, Fire, Pizza. They serve very tasty pizza and the place has a very good atmosphere. There are amazing sites like Table Mountain, which is a mountain that kind of looks like a table. We visited it yesterday on a city-sight-seeing bus that showed us a tour of Cape Town. On the tour, we also saw a group of native-African kids that performed a very awesome song with tribal music. It was very majestic and showed some of the true beauty of Africa. We visited Camp’s Bay Beach as well yesterday and we met very nice people. They offered us very cool stuff that was very interesting and tribal. As you may have already heard, Cape Town is going through a major water crisis, which is very bad but it has taught me to conserve and reuse water as often as possible. I have been taking much shorter showers and I only flush the toilet when necessary. They say that day zero, or the day when they run out of water, is coming very soon and was even predicted months ago. It’s scary, but we are doing our best to conserve water. Although, aside from having limited water, Cape Town rocks and it has been an awesome 1st week here.šŸ‘Œ

My First Week In Africa! -Ella

Good afternoon, people! I have just finished preparing tonightā€™s dessert: Grapefruit Jello! I am serving it in an actual grapefruit. Yesterday, my family and I went on a tour around Cape Town and got our Yellow Fever vaccinations. I have also been sick for the past couple of days and though Iā€™m over it I think Asher has caught it from me. I have been working on a special craft, but I am not going to name it on the blog because it is a secret. Donā€™t worry, Iā€™ll tell you later! Asher has been doing a lot of math homework so Iā€™ve mostly been going out with my parents or working on crafts. Life here has been pretty uneventful, but Iā€™m enjoying Cape Town quite a bit. As such, I canā€™t think of anything else to say so Iā€™ll write back soon!

Ella is in Cape Town!

Hey! I am writing to you from Cape Town, South Africa! We flew for two hours from Tel Aviv, Israel to Istanbul, Turkey, then 11 hours from Istanbul to here. I started writing this post in Istanbul but I lost my train of thought and had to start over (it was 1:00 am after all). When we arrived in Cape Town it was raining, a relief because we know they have a water crisis. They had signs posted all over the airport about conserving water, and instead of normal faucets in the bathrooms they had misters! It really shows how wasteful and careless most Americans are. Driving to our apartment I realized how colorful all the houses here are! There were sculptures and art all along the road and the ocean was crashing across the shore. Itā€™s too cold now to swim, but I canā€™t wait until the weather warms up. Apparently there are Great White Sharks here! I consider that the first day of our around-the-world trip, so here we go!

June in Israel. By Ella

Shalom! This is my first real blog post on JumpEarth.com, so bear with me here. I am writing this from my grandmotherā€™s house (we call her ā€œSavtaā€ in Hebrew) in Raā€™anana, Israel. So far Iā€™ve been hanging out with my cousins at escape rooms, cooking with my Savta, meeting all of my friends and family, and doing homework. Iā€™ve been having a lot of fun! I got to watch an air show at a military pilot graduation ceremony yesterday and Iā€™m really excited to see one particular airplane-obsessed friendā€™s reaction. Tonight my family and I are flying to Africa! Last Friday we went to the beach and my brother Asher got stung by a jellyfish. Weā€™re pretty sure heā€™s allergic. Iā€™m very excited because last school year I spent months making my Savta a present and I gave it to her a couple of days ago. Itā€™s a wood-burned Memory Box and it is filled with pictures of her and my late grandfather (or ā€œSabaā€). It has a wire tree embedded with lights in the middle and thereā€™s a little swing hanging down from it. She loved it so much that she cried! Iā€™m really happy she liked it so much because I put a lot of effort into it. As I said before, sheā€™s been cooking for us a lot, so here is one of my favorite recipes:

Bit-a-matah

Ingredients/Materials

  • 1.5 tomatoes
  • 2 eggs
  • Oil
  • Frying Pan
  • Whip
  • Fork
  1. Finely dice 1.5 tomatoes
  2. Crack 2 eggs and whip them
  3. Put oil in a frying pan
  4. Put the whipped eggs in the frying pan
  5. When the eggs look ready fold them in half (still in the pan) and put the tomatoes in on the pan
  6. Slide the eggs over the tomatoes for 15 seconds
  7. Squish the tomatoes using a fork
  8. Unfold the eggs
  9. Spread the tomatoes onto the eggs
  10. Wait 3 minutes
  11. Done!

My week in Israel, by Asher

Hi Everybody,

In Israel, my family and I have been hanging out with my grandmother; she is very fun because she’s very understanding, funny, and sweet. She’s 88 years old! We toured Israel’s cities and went to awesome restaurants and my dad is already planning my bar mitzvah! A restaurant I really like is Hondalay, which serves the best hot dogs and french fries in Israel. We also hang out with our cousins, Matan, Meital, and Noa, who live here and we do fun activities with them. One of these activities is going to escape rooms. They are really fun and one time we finished one with 7 minutes left to spare! We also went bowling and I got 2nd place with a score of 100! Most of my time is spent doing homework, but Israel is super fun and I really love it. It’s a really great place.  Asher.

Family, Fun and Sights of Israel

Hello JumpEarth Friends,

Ofer, Ella, Asher and I are having a great time in Israel.  We are spending lots of quality time with family and friends and seeing the beautiful sights of this country.  What really impresses me about the Israeli culture is the strong sense of closeness with the family and the strong sense of community in general.   The connections between people here are close and strong.  Ofer’s family has taken me in and accepted me as one of the clan.  It is heart-warming.   Ofer has an awesome Brother and Sister along with their own wonderful families.  They all have been showing us such a great time.  Oved and his Wife Michelle along with their children Matan, Meital and Noa have hosted us for Shabbat dinner, bowling and escape room fun.  Ronit and her husband Moti along with their children Imri, Oran, and Ariel have thrown us a homecoming party and have invited us to experience some of the best food and sights of Tel Aviv.  I could offer an entire web page about the delights of Tel Aviv, but I will save some of those for future posts.  After a day or two in Jerusalem for the Festival of Lights this week,  we will be heading out to Cape town, South Africa on Friday for a two month stay!  More to come soon and look for other posts from Ofer, Ella and Asher!  I’m off to “JumpEarth”….  Troy
